چکیده

Dutch listeners' looks to printed words were tracked while they listened to instructions to click on one of them. When presented with targets from word pairs where the first two syllables were segmentally identical but differed in stress location, listeners used stress information to recognize the target before segmental information disambiguated the words. Furthermore, the amount of lexical competition was influenced by the presence or absence of word-initial stress.

Picture-word interference reveals inhibitory effects of syllable frequency on lexical selection.

While previous research has shown that high syllable frequency can facilitate speech production at the level of phonological/phonetic encoding, little is known about its influence on prephonological processes, specifically lexical selection. The current study used a picture-word interference (PWI) task to (a) shed light on the stages of lexical access where syllable frequency is relevant, and (...

Acoustic Cues to Lexical Stress in Spastic Dysarthria

The current study examined the acoustic cues to lexical stress produced by speakers with spastic dysarthria and healthy control speakers. Of particular interest was the effect of stress location, which represented whether lexical stress was on the first vs. second syllable of the word. Results suggest that speakers with dysarthria convey lexical stress differently than do control speakers. The ...

Word segmentation in Persian continuous speech using F0 contour

Word segmentation in continuous speech is a complex cognitive process. Previous research on spoken word segmentation has revealed that in fixed-stress languages, listeners use acoustic cues to stress to de-segment speech into words. It has been further assumed that stress in non-final or non-initial position hinders the demarcative function of this prosodic factor. In Persian, stress is retract...

Lexical stress encoding in single word production estimated by event-related brain potentials.

An event-related brain potentials (ERPs) experiment was carried out to investigate the time course of lexical stress encoding in language production. Native speakers of Dutch viewed a series of pictures corresponding to bisyllabic names which were either stressed on the first or on the second syllable and made go/no-go decisions on the lexical stress location of those picture names. Behavioral ...

Electrophysiological markers of syllable frequency during written word recognition in French.

Several empirical lines of investigation support the idea that syllable-sized units may be involved in visual word recognition processes. In this perspective, the present study aimed at investigating further the nature of the process that causes syllabic effects in reading. To do so, the syllable frequency effect was investigated in French using event related potentials while participants perfo...
